On one seemingly innocent day around the turn of the millennium, Sir Alisdair Maddy McGlynn, a poor Scottish Laird, decides to go fishing on his faithful boat, ‘Kingfisher’. Little does he know that one decision will change his life for good.
Caught in a massive storm off the north west coast of Scotland, Sir Maddy’s boat is hit by both a tornado and a huge waterspout. Knocked out, he’s transported on the top of the waterspout to a new land he soon learns is called Erehwon.
With his boat beyond repair, Sir Maddy starts to explore his new surroundings, little realising that he’s being watched by hundreds of pairs of eyes. What he finds astounds him - more wealth than he could have dreamed of in the form of precious metals and stones. But the owners of the find might prove an even more amazing, and more dangerous, secret...
Who doesn’t love a story about dragons, except anyone called Lannister of course.
This story is aimed at young people, and was a nice easy read without getting over complicated, although there were a lot of character names to remember. The author’s style of writing made it easy to visualise each scene, ably assisted by S. Kaye Watson's illustrations, which I think the target audience will appreciate.
I think children will enjoy reading about Sir Maddy, Fogarty, Speedy, and even Ruffly and Sulky, and will like the illustrations too. I gave Fogarty: The Strange Tale of Fogarty Maximus & Other Dragons, by Chris Bylteel four stars.
