Angel's Child

by

When twelve-year-old Amber goes to stay with her Grandad Charlie on the Island of Legna, the last thing she expects is to be stranded there after a huge storm. Left to look after Charlie who is suffering with dementia, she has only her fourteen-year-old neighbour Emil to help.

The appearance of two strangers on the Island looking for Charlie’s neighbour Katrin, heralds the beginning of a series of strange events. And when a young girl called Ella is discovered hiding in Katrin’s house, real life seems to become mixed up with an old folktale. Will Amber and Emil discover what’s really happening and if they do, will anyone believe them?

Larraine's website contains free resources for teachers and will soon include ideas on how to use Red Snow as a class text to develop literacy.

In January 2018, she worked with 8 classes of pupils in Crofton Junior school Wakefield Yorkshire, to introduce them to her book Red Snow. The children had not read the book before, so she read them the first few pages and summarised the rest of the first chapter. Then she used drama strategies to work with them to make up an extra scene, which she later wrote up for them. For the scene and description of the strategies- see the section on Drama and reading for meaning on her website larrainesharrison.com
