Iain Macdonald
I was born in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. My father was a surgeon in the country from 1930 until 1959. I did all my schooling in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. My paternal Grandfather was Gamekeeper to the Earl of Moray on his Darnaway estate in Scotland. It is not surprising that I got from my father a love of going on safari into the bush and walking among animals. I have a degree in Psychology and Literature. My first novel was Cleopatra's Journey, a story of a relationship between a matriarchal elephant and an ecologist. The human characters are based on real people. The events are also real. The elephant are fiction but based on fact. I paint and sing in a choir.

The book is primarily about conducting walking safaris in the Luangwa National Park Zambia. I worked as Safari Manager at Chibembe Lodge. Norman Carr trained me to lead walking safarise. Phil Berry who did tremendous work for Save the Rhino Trust was also attached to Chibembe Lodge when I was working there. David Shepherd the well-known elephant artist often came to stay at the lodge. Prince Andrew was a guest at one of our walking safari camps when he was nineteen years of age. I set up a walking safari operation in the very remote North Luangwa National Park when two American ecologists were tracking lion. They wrote the book Cry of the Kalahari when they were working in Botswana. I spent a year as Safari Manager in the Selous Game Park in Tanzania.
