This is the shockingly honest and unique story of a child's personal struggle to grow to adulthood, taking in the early death of his mother, hideous experiences at school, escape from genocide and ultimately the finding of love. Despite the crushing challenges, we never lose faith in the author's resolve as he brings us to his ultimate escape to security. Once started, the book is impossible to put down, a challenging but rewarding read which affirms your faith in the human condition. You will find, however, that it leaves you wanting to know more about the author's experiences in his new life, a sequel would be very much appreciated. 5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book I loved this book, written from the heart, with descriptive passages which took me right to the action whether he was recounting memories as a 10-year-old boy, or as a teenager and young man. It opened my eyes to another world. In our multi-cultural society, I have friends from many different backgrounds, but realise that as a white English woman I have no understanding of the childhood experiences or cultural heritage others bring with them. Eugene recounts some heart-warming, but also horrific experiences. What tenacity and resilience to have established a successful family and life over here after such a start! Although no literary masterpiece, I could not put the book down. As well as the worst human tragedy, followed by the hardest of boarding school experiences this story was also dotted with adventures reminiscent of Enid Blyton of Mark Twain. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful & heartbreaking at the same time What a truly wonderful and at the same time heartbreaking story! Yet throughout there is a sense of a character who has great strength in the face of such adversity a real inspiration.
