Our Secret

A Story of Love and Deception

by

Having fled Thatcherite Britain, Alex Jackson, almost penniless and nursing the wounds of consecutive failed relationships, attempts to rebuild his life in post Franco Spain.

An excellent little page turner about fate and how two very different women change the peaceful life of an Englishman living an idyllic life in Spain. Tony Byford's debut novel is rich in interesting and oddball characters, has fine dialogue and paints a wonderful picture of the British ex pat leaving an oppressive Thatcherite England for the more peaceful waters of the Andalucia region of Spain.  It  was all going so well until these two polar opposite women came into his life and changed it forever. Pretty soon, he's involved in a story about a stolen ring, the Spanish Civil War and Mussolini's fascists. I'm looking forward to reading more of Byford's work. He's got something that I like.

An excellent debut novel in my opinion. Well done Tony Byford. The author has a very colourful and descriptive writing style as well as a sharp wit and eye for detail. He deals more than evenly with an extremely sensitive subject, i.e. the relationship between Alex, the main character and Sal, his young and often obfuscating teenage neighbour. Suspense, humour and erotica abound in this tale of love and deception as do hints of the arcane, courtesy of single minded Lara, the bitter daughter of an impoverished Italian aristocratic family. I found this book thoroughly entertaining.

I really enjoyed this book. It´s moody with tension, takes so many twists and turns I was never sure where it was going until the last couple of pages. The characters are memorable for their uniqueness. Lara for her unshakeable belief in the cards and numbers and Alex for his weaknesses despite his best intentions and not least Henry for being the unsung hero. And as for Mo, I really despised him for his creepiness and actually laughed when he got his comeuppance! In my opinion, when a writer can make you feel like that, he´s proved his worth unquestionably. A fine first novel. I´m looking forward to reading more work from Tony Byford.

An excellent debut novel that I just couldn't put down! The author describes life in the Spanish 'campo' in a way that makes you feel you are there too; smelling the herbs, feeling the rain or the scorching sun and most of all its offer of freedom and solitude.
This book covers some daring ground that at times creates a feeling of unease, intrigue and excitement that culminates in such an explosion of danger, lust, anger and magic that I was late for work as I had to reach the end! Highly recommended. Iesten

A fascinating read! A deeply moving portrayal of the life of an adventurous Brit in the hills of southern Andalusia. Tony Byford describes the emotions and instincts of a man psyche that other authors rarely touch upon. A great read, hard to put down!

I liked this book very much. The author takes on the very sensitive subject of an adult child relationship and deals with it in a very well crafted manner. Not at all the kind of story one would expect about a Brit living on the Costa del Sol. No glitzy villas or tales of glamour and the high life. Just a down to earth, often amusing story about love and how it can arrive in the most unexpected of ways.

This novel is played out in the countryside of Southern Spain. Within the plot we witness the life of a multifaceted single male character who experiences interesting relationships with two different women; one of them a girl of fourteen.
The story is full of exciting dynamics with a surprising end. An interesting love story. I recommend it to readers interested in suspense and complicated characters with love-driven behavior, not to mention human interaction at the highest level.

I took the book with me from Spain to Germany and it proved tob e a very good company – the setting in Andalusia is really colourfull and rich, remindet me all the time of home. Also the plot and main characters I liked them a lot. The story is unfolding itself very nicely with lots of unexprected surprises and interwoven historical aspects of Spain, not to forget the magical aspects that lead the reader into misterious grounds. The caracters are carefully build up, richly desribed with their individual character traits - absolutely convincing. Well done – hope time will allow for a second book ;-)
