John chose the title-poem for its simple, believable story. The rest accrued in the usual way. He found those now grouped in City of Flowers particularly moving to write.
John’s visits to Italy, and the many Italian stories he heard in Florence, influenced him permanently.

A short time in the army, and a long career in teaching, with spare-time painting and writing, were a background to occasional exhibiting (oil paintings) and publishing (short stories, poems), and the the production of two short plays, one by BBC television. Retirement brought two prize-winning novels and international publication. He regards the new book as a bonus, 'especially recovering a child's point of view, rather than hindsight'.
After his Norfolk childhood, marriage and work have led to Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire. Three children have been followed by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
