James and the Birthday Balloon

James and the Birthday Balloon is an uplifting picture book, suitable for children aged 3-7. It follows on from the hugely successful James and the Amazing Gift (Matador, 2016). This time James is heading to the birthday party of his best friend Ruby.

During the birthday party, James and Ruby are given giant balloons by the entertainer. But Ruby lets go of hers and whilst chasing after it, hurts her leg and needs to go to hospital. She’s scared because she doesn’t know what to expect.

This is a reassuring story for any child faced with having to go to hospital, and how James saves the day with a small act of kindness and a smile that soon spreads throughout the hospital.

For every copy sold, £1 is going to raise vital funds to help support Evelina London Children’s Hospital, which provides care and life-saving treatment for children in south London and beyond. Each copy of the book will also include a free audio recording of the story by TV’s Dr Ranj Singh (CBeebies, ITV’s This Morning).

Nicola will be signing copies of James and the Birthday Balloon at Waterstones in walton-on-Thames on Saturday 11th November from 11am.

Nicola Rowley

Nicola was born in Basildon in Essex and credits having some great teachers at primary and secondary school who both inspired and helped with her love of the written word.

From the age of seven, when her aunt asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, she answered, a writer or a poet.

Nicola studied Journalism and Sociology at City University in London, so that she could become a Journalist and write. She fell in love with broadcasting and instead became a radio newsreader, TV producer and reporter, before moving into Communications.

In between it all, she also launched her own successful photography business, which she still runs today, specialising in children and families, weddings and commercial imagery.

When her son was born in 2014, within weeks she started reading to him. It was from seeing his enjoyment from turning the pages, learning new words and going on special adventures, that inspired her to write her first book; James and the Amazing Gift.

Nicola lives in Hersham, Surrey with her husband and son.
