Message from Joshua: Part One

Powerful, provocative, romantic drama at its best...

by

In the first part of the Message from Joshua series, a young Ralph Harington falls madly in love with his music-loving sweetheart, Annie Spencer – but the gathering storm clouds of war loom heavy in 1939 as our story moves from the playing fields of Cheltenham to war torn Burma.

What is the significance of the gift that Ralph takes to war? Can he survive to make it home and if he does, what of his beautiful Annie? At key moments, to the strains of some of the most poignant music ever written, the characters take the reader through their emotional roller coaster of tragedy and tears, passion and romance and a suspense that is only broken some fifty years later.

In this powerful and heartrending romance, family drama and wartime machinations in Whitehall are set against a thought provoking religious and historical backdrop. Not since 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' has the Cobb at Lyme Regis been the scene of such heartrending romance. This is a love story cast in heaven and set in stone… or will it be torn asunder when the war hits?

After the growing tensions of Part One make sure you read Part Two as the drama and action reaches its poignant climax.

I was fortunate to be asked to preview this book. The title intrigued me and it did not disappoint. A family saga beginning pre WW2, we are introduced to the main characters and I warmed to them quickly. The tale moves swiftly and is full of history, romance, some theology which I found both interesting and stirring, and one is left in suspense at the end of Part 1, so much so that I was compelled to read the second part to find out what happened next.

This is the first book I've read by Phillip St Lawrence. It's the first part of a well-paced story about love and life during the war. I identified with the Cotswold setting as it is an area I have visited, and it was interesting to see the events of the book unfold here.

The contrast of the picturesque villages and Cheltenham as a backdrop for the growth of the relationship between Ralph and Annie versus other scenes set in London complements the plot. There's friendship between another couple, Annie's sister Lizzie and Jasper. I was eager to see what happened there. The story made me feel the happiness of finding love but I felt fearful for the characters as the start of the war was announced and wondered what would become of them. At time, I wondered who Ralph had most feelings for-Annie or Lizzie. This added a personal conflict into the story.

Thank you to Phillip St Lawrence and the publisher via NetGalley for the chance to review this eARC. Now I know the characters and their backgrounds, I'm looking forward to part two.
