One midsummer day in 1814, Tom, his sister Lucy and good friend Jos laze by a waterfall in the heart of the fells. Their rural way of life is disintegrating, and while they contemplate what lies ahead, Tom reads to them from a book of poems by William Wordsworth. Little do they realise the effect this will have on their futures.
'Set in the early 1800's, this book is written so well that you feel you are actually living in that time! The story is of two childhood friends, Tom and Jos, and the different directions their lives take them. For Tom, his challenge is life as a priest in north Lancashire, dealing with the Chartism movement. Jos, on the other hand, is a farmer, but is charged with theft and deported to Australia. Life throws a lot at these two men, and the evolution of the story is well-written and depicted. Goodreads
