The Accidental Carer

100 tips for meeting the challenges when caring for a stroke survivor

Nicole Banerji never thought that caring for her Dad would be easy after he had the stroke that left him in need of 24 hour, professional care, but Nicole never imagined that she would have to deal with so much. His basic needs were taken care of by the professionals, her role was to look after his interests and to keep him happy, motivated and involved in life. Easier said than done when someone has gone from living an active, independent life, to being severely disabled in nursing care, all in the twinkling of an eye.

Nicole was a novice in this strange world, trying to do her best to help her Dad cope with his new life, discovering a myriad of problems and stumbling over solutions in surprising places.

This book takes the reader on a journey through the challenges faced when someone suddenly and unexpectedly becomes a carer for an adult. It covers a wide variety of topics including: getting information out of health care professionals; dealing with emotions; getting out and about; managing pain; discovering financial abuse etc.

The Accidental Carer uses the story of the writer’s experiences in caring for her Dad and goes on to analyse the underlying themes within these. Each challenge concludes with 10 practical and realistic tips for handling these difficult situations. The challenges will ring a chord for anyone who has ever had to take care of someone they love.

Nicole's first book How to Gossip whetted her appetite for writing books that share very practical, yet previously unspoken, hints and tips on subjects close to one's heart. She created the British Association of Gossipmongers and wrote this tongue-in-cheek book as if it were continuing professional development for members.Using her alter-ego Nicole Blabbermouth, President of BAG she was unfettered in dispensing her baubles of insight, not only about the gossip itself, but also concerning the way in which it was done.

When her Dad had a severe stroke in 2006, Nicole found herself having to face challenge after challenge in helping him come to terms with and enjoy life. Her second book The Accidental Carer tells their story and again is packed full of practical advice for anyone who suddenly and unexpectedly becomes a carer.
The Accidental Carer will be published in late 2009.
