The Returning Tide

We all build our lives on some form of deception known only to ourselves; it is how we survive and our secrets are rarely exposed. Claire Bentley, a wealthy and successful business woman has concealed her secrets for thirty years. Now, recently widowed, she is persuaded, against her better judgement, to join her daughter, Krystina, on a holiday in Cornwall. Soon, unforeseen events bring back the memories and terror of her last holiday in Cornwall and she is forced to confront her past. Again, Claire flees from ‘that cursed land full of promise and desolation’. Once home, she feels compelled to write her story, while clinging to the hope that no one will ever need to read it. Why has she hidden the truth for thirty years? And how much does Krystina know about her mother? The Returning Tide is a dark, disturbing story of loss and deception, time and identity.

A very exciting read, but hard to put down so make sure you don't have to get up early if reading late at night.

If you enjoy wise and witty tales, read this book. A chilling insight into the complexities and manipulations of passion stilled. Absorbing, unsettling, with the odd chuckle, the story delivers undulating tension to the last ...

Could not put this book down...

It's 1a.m. and I have just finished Julia Sokota's book. I couldn't put it down. The plot is simple once you get into it, although for me the ending was not obvious in the detail, although I got an idea as to how it would possibly end about half-way through it. Her writing skill lies is her characterisation. Writing in the first person, she is chillingly able to depict her main character's shredded emotions. It left me feeling wrung out. Well worth reading especially if you want an uncomfortable thought-provoking roller coaster that leaves you shattered. Well, it did me. Not a comfortable read, but certainly a compelling one.
