A good plot... but we need the next book sooner than three years!

This was the best thriller that I have read in a long time! 'The Accidental Warrior by S. J. Mantle is a suspenseful story with a strong female protagonist. Detective Harriet Lacey a skilled investigator gets too close to solving a crime. In order to stifle her she is transferred from one division to another. In spite of her antagonistic crooked superiors, Harriet pursues her investigation. This action packed suspense thriller is a must read especially if you like a strong female hero. This book was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this action packed bookenseful story with a strong female protagonist. Peter James is the current master of police procedural thrillers but S J Mantle is snapping at his heels. Every good book teaches us something and thanks to The Accidental Warrior I know a great deal more about Philip II of Macedon, circa 336 BC, than I did a week ago. The author skillfully weaves a terrifyingly clever antagonist within a plot that relates back to a sophisticated race of people who still inform our current way of living. I am sure, once word has spread, especially to fans of Rachel Abbott, Peter James, Lee Child et al, The Accidental Warrior will climb, swiftly, up the Amazon rankings.

Exceptionally well written book which weaves the past into the present. I found the in-depth knowledge of police procedures made the book interesting to read. The main female character was very strong and was someone you could relate to. The book led the reader through the dynamics of a current police investigation but also gave great details of past history, which I found really interesting. I read the book within three days which showed how much I enjoyed it. I look forward to the next instalment.

As a regular reader of Police Procedural/Detective Crime Thrillers from the likes of Peter James, Robert Galbraith, and Clyde Phillips, I was looking forward to reading this novel. It was refreshing to find that S J Mantle has an eye for the little details of police procedure that make it so realistic - something that can be frustratingly lacking in some books in this genre. Anybody with any interest or background with law enforcement will recognise some of the character traits of the lead characters within the narrative. What set it apart from the majority of this genre was the link back into ancient history; this was skilfully woven into the story without distracting from the present day events that it was informing.
I found that the book captured my imagination right from the start. Every time I had to take a break from reading it I found myself looking for an opportunity to pick it up and get back into it! It holds its own within the genre and I am certainly looking forward to the next instalment of Harriet Lacey's predicaments.
An excellent debut from S J Mantle, may there be many more.

OMG! What a wonderful storyline. I am at a loss to find the words to describe how fantastic this novel is.
I only had one problem with this book..... I made the mistake of starting The Accidental Warrior while on a break at work. It is very hard to concentrate on what you are supposed to be doing when all you want to do is find out what is happening. I loved it so much, I just ordered the paperback edition.
What a privilege it was to read such an intriguing story. I cannot wait for more from this author

I can't believe that I have to wait until 2021 to read the next installment of Harriet's life. I just wanted the story to keep going. It has mystery, danger, and a hit of romance. It's a brilliant read and would recommend it to everyone.

I was given the book as a gift and as the review title suggests I have not read a book in years. It was gripping and intriguing from the start and I couldn't wait to read the next chapter. The plot has many twists and turns that keep the reader hooked. I can't believe I have to wait until 2021 for the next instalment to see what happens to DS Harriet Lacey. I will definitely be reading the authors next book.

This book not only provides an intense plot which follows the ins and outs of policing, but informs of fascinating artefacts, characters and anecdotes from ancient history. Harriet Lacey is the protagonist at the forefront of the investigation, drawing in the reader with her relatable struggles and challenges. You quickly fall in love with her powerful stance and believe in her to solve a continually exacerbating situation.
Modern policing and ancient history, concepts often antithetical, are eloquently interwoven as the plot unravels.
I would thoroughly recommend this beautifully written book and look forward to many more by S.J Mantle.
A tremendous read which holds its own in the world of suspense and intrigue crime writing.
From the first page it was absorbing and provided a delightful background of Greek history into the depth of the investigation which cleverly twisted and drew the reader into even deeper concentration.
The author’s attention to criminal detail was refreshingly accurate.
A compelling and unpredictable read.

I was given a copy of The Accidental Warrior by a friend and I had planned to save it to read on holiday. After reading the reviews on Amazon and the précis of the book I decided I couldn't wait until the holiday started. I finished it in two days and now I can't believe I may have to wait three years for the sequel! It's well written, it has a good pace and the plot is full of twists and turns that keep your interest. As a debut novel, it's a good one!
Fantastic book. I couldn’t put it down. The twists and turns of the plot were riveting. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Entertaining and informative: an intriguing mix of ancient and modern cleverly interwoven to create a credible plot and tantalising storyline. I await the sequel with eager anticipation.
An intriguing page turner, brilliantly written with an engaging lead character. Can't wait for the next book to find out what's in store for Harriet Lacey. A great debut novel from S J Mantle.
A thrilling page turner with believable characters and an unexpected twist...

This book is a brilliant authentic thriller. The book’s protagonist, Harriet Lacey, is a strong female lead who will not be beaten in her quest to unravel the historical events which influence the present-day murders. I was totally absorbed in it and wanted to get back to reading it at every opportunity.
The authenticity of the police characters is refreshing, and the author’s 27 years of policing experience shine through in the storytelling. The author’s policing background, together with the in-depth historical knowledge and research are both apparent throughout the book.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a fast-paced crime thriller with an ancient history twist that adds to the novel’s intrigue. I’m looking forward to the next instalment in the Harriet Lacey series.

As someone who does not read regularly I could not put this book down!! It is set at a great pace and has you turning every page with anticipation . The story line is engaging right to the very end and I found myself fully immersed in the thrilling plot. A fantastic read and I can not wait for the next instalment.

I am a regular reader of crime novels by Tess Gerritson & Susan Hill amongst others.
I started this book and within a few pages I completely forgot it was SJ Mantle’s debut novel!
The book flows so well, I couldn’t put it down.
I love the layers of the story with the mix of history. However it was the characters that I really enjoyed. DS Harriet Lacey’s character in particular built through the book and my only disappointment is having to wait for the second book
A great read . Highly recommend. Can't wait for the next novel . Thank you .
Great from page one: 2 September 2018

Great story line with insight to history I knew nothing about. Very cleverly written and kept in suspense right to the very end. So pleased Harriet Lacey will continue she is a very likeable character. I enjoyed the read and look forward to the next book. Well done!
Detective Harriet Lacey is reassigned to an investigation headed by her cheating husband. Respected community members are dying in mysterious circumstances.
Harriet discovers her investigation is connected to an ancient murder and an ancient organisation.
The book flows well between the present day murders and the historical element. An easy and enjoyable read.

5 star rating from me and easy to see why so many others have clearly felt the same.
I found this to be a thoroughly absorbing read. The plot moves at a good pace with lots of twists and turns along the way and is very cleverly written I thought.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and already looking forward to finding out what else might be in store for Sgt Lacey!
