A good plot... but we need the next book sooner than three years!

This was the best thriller that I have read in a long time! 'The Accidental Warrior by S. J. Mantle is a suspenseful story with a strong female protagonist. Detective Harriet Lacey a skilled investigator gets too close to solving a crime. In order to stifle her she is transferred from one division to another. In spite of her antagonistic crooked superiors, Harriet pursues her investigation. This action packed suspense thriller is a must read especially if you like a strong female hero. This book was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this action packed bookenseful story with a strong female protagonist. This is a good mystery. I liked the characters and the plot moves at a good pace. This was the first book I have read by this author and I look forward to more.

Peter James is the current master of police procedural thrillers but S J Mantle is snapping at his heels. Every good book teaches us something and thanks to The Accidental Warrior I know a great deal more about Philip II of Macedon, circa 336 BC, than I did a week ago. The author skillfully weaves a terrifyingly clever antagonist within a plot that relates back to a sophisticated race of people who still inform our current way of living. I am sure, once word has spread, especially to fans of Rachel Abbott, Peter James, Lee Child et al, The Accidental Warrior will climb, swiftly, up the Amazon rankings.

Exceptionally well written book which weaves the past into the present. I found the in-depth knowledge of police procedures made the book interesting to read. The main female character was very strong and was someone you could relate to. The book led the reader through the dynamics of a current police investigation but also gave great details of past history, which I found really interesting. I read the book within three days which showed how much I enjoyed it. I look forward to the next instalment.

As a regular reader of Police Procedural/Detective Crime Thrillers from the likes of Peter James, Robert Galbraith, and Clyde Phillips, I was looking forward to reading this novel. It was refreshing to find that S J Mantle has an eye for the little details of police procedure that make it so realistic - something that can be frustratingly lacking in some books in this genre. Anybody with any interest or background with law enforcement will recognise some of the character traits of the lead characters within the narrative. What set it apart from the majority of this genre was the link back into ancient history; this was skilfully woven into the story without distracting from the present day events that it was informing.
I found that the book captured my imagination right from the start. Every time I had to take a break from reading it I found myself looking for an opportunity to pick it up and get back into it! It holds its own within the genre and I am certainly looking forward to the next instalment of Harriet Lacey's predicaments.
An excellent debut from S J Mantle, may there be many more.

OMG! What a wonderful storyline. I am at a loss to find the words to describe how fantastic this novel is.
I only had one problem with this book..... I made the mistake of starting The Accidental Warrior while on a break at work. It is very hard to concentrate on what you are supposed to be doing when all you want to do is find out what is happening. I loved it so much, I just ordered the paperback edition.
What a privilege it was to read such an intriguing story. I cannot wait for more from this author

I can't believe that I have to wait until 2021 to read the next installment of Harriet's life. I just wanted the story to keep going. It has mystery, danger, and a hit of romance. It's a brilliant read and would recommend it to everyone.

I got a copy of this due to interest in the synopsis. It's a surprisingly good thriller that I think plenty of people would enjoy. It's definitely worth reading.

S J Mantle is graduate in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. She is a wife and mother and divides her time between writing and running a smallholding in the West Country. She served as a police officer for twenty-seven years during which time, she was involved in some high profile criminal investigations. Her debut novel, The Accidental Warrior is a crime thriller with a strong female lead and intriguing historical twist.
