I was overawed by the preface to the book, wondered if perhaps it would be beyond my understanding. However, once I had started reading it I found it difficult to put down. The author enters the minds of his characters and describes their emotions using an amazing mix of similes and metaphors. He captures the grandeur, loneliness, danger and beauty of the Newlands valley with his carefully chosen words. Admittedly I found some of the spirituality hard to reconcile with my own beliefs about time and reason, but I would recommend The Cause of Reason as a "must read" to anyone who enjoys a challenge to their thinking.
