Ex-City financier Desmond Harper takes early retirement and moves to a period cottage in rural Herefordshire, attached to which is a mature cider apple orchard. Encouraged by a curmudgeonly ex-shepherd, Old Sam Williams, into making cider the traditional way, Desmond sources equipment in rural France where he happens to purchase a 1930's telephone from the French equivalent of a car boot sale. Although the instrument is obviously totally disfunctional it nevertheless rings - causing consternation and upheaval to what should have been a gentle and idyllic lifestyle.
