Wilde is a aspiring writer who has found some success with his debut novel but is struggling to write a follow-up. His new love, the beautiful, enigmatic Emily, works in an off-licence but has her own dreams of owning a vineyard and making great wine.
Just when they are about to run out of money and out of ideas, an unexpected windfall allows them to leave Dublin behind and move to a small coastal town in Western Australia. They are building a new life together when Emily discovers that she is pregnant and Cara’s arrival turns their new world on its head.
Emily finds it difficult to come to terms with being a mother. Wilde is, to his own surprise, relishing fatherhood when, one night, Cara disappears from her bed.
The story follows Wilde’s desperate search for Cara as he struggles to hold on to the balloon-strings of their new life, to navigate a world he neither recognises nor understands, and to keep his marriage together in the face of unfolding circumstances that seem set to pull it apart.
