This saga of a black small-town family store evolving into a commercial dynasty is an extraordinary creation and in some respects, a mini history of African Americans. The author's in-depth research is evident in endless details of everyday life and the characters themselves are generally rounded and believable .... in many ways this book might turn out to be a modern classic, in the vein of admired authors such as Marquez.

Geoffrey Hindley is mainly an historian of the medieval era. He writes with a passion that informs the reader's mind. This time he has turned to fiction. The informative, enlivening passion endures. Any reader would become involved in the trials and tribulations of the characters in Black Dynasty. I recommend it highly
