This is an engaging read about village life. Maggie, a midwife lives in the village with her husband Rob and their little boy Charlie. In addition to being a midwife, Maggie also unofficially rescues animals and over the course of the book acquires a small menagerie of animals large and small. Through Maggie, we meet her patients, their families and her neighbours and get an insight into the daily struggles of these characters. Despite being an easy read, this book does not shy away from difficult and serious topics and deals with them in a caring and sensitive way. Maggie comes across as a woman who cares deeply for her patients and is passionate about what she does.
I really enjoyed this book and I found the author's style very engaging. The descriptions of village life reminded me of Miss Read's books. The characters are easy to connect with and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys tales of village life.

I loved this book but was really sad to see it was the second in the series as i hate reading books out of synch. Reminded me a bit like Darling buds of May. I will need to get the first book now and probably skim read this one again

If you like a story set in a small English village, you're sure to love this book by Jan Menell. I had not read the previous book, but had no trouble catching up. The book has some very interesting characters, not all of them are human! Lots of humour, and also a lot of information about the practice of midwifery.

A joy to read! The author has a wonderful knack of evoking the 70's, village life with all is quirky characters and idiosyncracies and the joys and sorrows of being a midwife.
The strong relationship between the main characters makes us realise that some lucky people have really solid marriages and that's uplifting. Roll on the third instalment and more donkeys!
