After Charlie

Mucking Out and Tucking In

by

Mother, wife, midwife and animal lover extraordinaire, Maggie Edwards is back!

In Jan Menell’s second novel, Maggie finds herself well and truly at the heart of village life, with all the ups and downs that involves. Following the death of an elderly villager, Maggie develops an abiding relationship with the village elders, learning and imparting knowledge in equal measure. She also finds a special synergy growing between herself and the mothers she cares for in her role as a midwife.

A preoccupation with her job, the elders and the assortment of animals she acquires help to ease the sadness Maggie faces over her own miscarriages and her desire for another child. And the arrival of her mother in the village proves even more distracting…

With vandalised allotments, village fetes, blossoming romances and enduring friendships, After Charlie is a charming tale of a very English village, a cast of engaging characters and one woman’s ever-increasing menagerie.

With thanks to netgalley for an early copy in return for an honest review. First time reading this author and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's full of intrigue and friendship. I really liked this book.

I loved this book, it was such a sweet well written story of a simpler time. It was funny at times. Sad at others. Hopefully there is a follow up .

Maggie is a midwife and after a few miscarriages she decides to just accept that she would only have 1 child. She keeps on taking loads of abandoned animals. She just keeps thinking about the loss of Charlie had on her life and life of the villagers.

This is an engaging read about village life. Maggie, a midwife lives in the village with her husband Rob and their little boy Charlie. In addition to being a midwife, Maggie also unofficially rescues animals and over the course of the book acquires a small menagerie of animals large and small. Through Maggie, we meet her patients, their families and her neighbours and get an insight into the daily struggles of these characters. Despite being an easy read, this book does not shy away from difficult and serious topics and deals with them in a caring and sensitive way. Maggie comes across as a woman who cares deeply for her patients and is passionate about what she does.

I really enjoyed this book and I found the author's style very engaging. The descriptions of village life reminded me of Miss Read's books. The characters are easy to connect with and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys tales of village life.

I loved this book but was really sad to see it was the second in the series as i hate reading books out of synch. Reminded me a bit like Darling buds of May. I will need to get the first book now and probably skim read this one again

If you like a story set in a small English village, you're sure to love this book by Jan Menell. I had not read the previous book, but had no trouble catching up. The book has some very interesting characters, not all of them are human! Lots of humour, and also a lot of information about the practice of midwifery.

A joy to read! The author has a wonderful knack of evoking the 70's, village life with all is quirky characters and idiosyncracies and the joys and sorrows of being a midwife.

The strong relationship between the main characters makes us realise that some lucky people have really solid marriages and that's uplifting. Roll on the third instalment and more donkeys!
