This highly personal picture book is the summing up of the lifetime work of Hal and Deena Brooks.
Hal – woodworker, clown, writer, artist, sculptor – and his late wife Deena – dancer, needlewoman, children’s entertainer, fancy dress shop proprietor – worked on many projects together, which have now been carefully captured in the pages of Our Life’s Work.
Every item within this book is clearly photographed and described, and includes references to the costumes made during Hal’s career as a clown, photographs of over 40 full size paintings commissioned in oils for décor in restaurants and offices, and over 1600 name designs and other products created by Hal in plywood.
Also described are Hal and Deena’s larger sculptures made from cardboard and papier mache, together with large vases, children’s playthings, carnival heads, garden decorations and sculptures using recycled materials, all shown in a ‘how to make’ format. As a member of the Sussex Guild, Hal was commissioned to make over five hundred personal sculptures in pine, using a unique laminating process that he invented. Many of these are shown and described in Our Life’s Work.
This publication will be of interest to anybody who has created or made anything for themselves.
