The Long Shadow recorded for Talking Books for the Blind

Loretta Proctor’s compelling historical novel The Long Shadow has been recorded for Talking Books for the Blind.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) works to support blind and partially sighted people across the UK. Only 7% of books are accessible to blind and partially sighted people and the RNIB help to provide access to over 23,000 Talking Books.

Speaking about the process, Loretta explained, ‘It was a wonderful experience. Maggie Mash, an experienced reader was able to read with many voices and the audio producer, Thuy, being blind himself, was able to pick up on any extraneous noises and generally edit to work so it would sound seamless.’

The Long Shadow tells the story of fourteen-year-old Andrew who discovers his mother’s hidden diary at his grandmother’s house during a Christmas holiday. His eyes are opened to a family secret when he reads about her time as a nurse on Salonika during the First World War, and the tragic love affair she had with his father, a Greek officer, who died in battle.

Described by Colin Wilson, author of The Outsider, as a ‘marvelously accomplished book, The Long Shadow will be available as part of RNIB’s continued drive to make more books accessible to blind and partially sighted people.

‘I feel very proud to have made my book available for blind people to enjoy,’ adds Loretta.
