IPG Spring Conference

Last week Troubador’s Directors, Jeremy Thompson and Jane Rowland, attended the IPG’s (Independent Publishers’ Guild) Spring Conference that took place at Heythrop Park, Oxfordshire.

This two-day event, brings together the UK’s indie publishers for a series of workshops, presentations and keynote speeches about every aspect of publishing plus, of course, offers those all important opportunities to network during coffee breaks, lunches, dinners and social events.

While Troubador have been members of the IPG for several years, enjoying many of their industry events, this was our first time attending the Spring Conference.

Covering a wide range of topics relevant to indie publishers – we found that the sessions focusing on new opportunities for indie publishers, from crowdfunding to the value of data analytics and web tools, were particularly relevant for us. Keynote speakers YS Chi (Elsevier) and (former Government Minister) Sir Vince Cable completed a diverse and interesting selection of speakers.

The diversity, flexibility and passion of the indie publisher was rightly celebrated during the conference, however any mention of ‘the author’ – surely the starting point of all books! – was oddly missing, with the focus most definitely being on ‘the book’ as a product.

Attending events like this are so important for Troubador Directors and staff – giving us the chance to keep up to date on new thinking in publishing and to make connections that benefit all of our authors.
