Crime Pays - for self-published author Mike Welham!
Mike Welham has been invited onto Talk Radio Europe for a regular monthly interview with presenter Hannah Murray about crime. These interviews can be heard on www.talkradioeurope at 1.10 UK time on 26 March, 23 April, 28 May, 25 June, 23 July, 27 Aug, 24 Sept, 22 Oct, 26 Nov.
During his first slot, Mike told listeners of his meeting with the Rt Hon Priti Patel at the House of Commons on 2 February to discuss his book and the impact of crime on society in the UK. He explained that Priti put forward a Bill - Victims of Crime (Code of Practice) Bill and that it had its first reading and should have had its second reading on 27 Jan 2012. There was no Parliamentary time and so the Bill is dead. Undeterred Priti is trying to get the principles of her Bill included into other crime legislation. Mike explained that currently victims do not have a voice and are not part of the justice system. He said that victims should under the current system be able to give a victim statement that would be submitted if a perpetrator were found guilty. The idea is that the statement gives the victim a voice about the impact the crime has had on them and their family as well as giving their view on punishment. In his experience it is very rare for this to happen and the Probation Service consider them to be in conflict with what they determine is a suitable sentence. What should happen is that all involved in a criminal prosecution should be heard including the victim and magistrates not left to just hear the soft options from the Probation Service - all of this is covered in Mike's book Crime Pays
He concluded that following his meeting with Priti a copy of the book has been sent to Prime Minister David Cameron - so he will have to see if there is any response and outcome. You can read more about the book here: www.crimepaysuk.com
