“Simon West has replaced the Rosetta stone of Pound’s translation of Cavalcanti, a transvaluation long overdue, with a translation of unparalleled lucidity and musicality, creating a Cavalcanti as faithful to the spirit of the 13th century as to the 21st."

The Selected Poetry of Guido Cavalcanti
A Critical English Edition
by Simon West

This book aims to be the most useful and engaging introduction to the medieval Italian poet Guido Cavalcanti in English.

The Selected Poetry of Guido Cavalcanti: A Critical English Edition aims to combine the most recent scholarly work on the poet with the best translations available in order to make Cavalcanti more accessible to an English speaking audience.

The book includes verse translations of a selection of the best of the poet’s work, including the important ‘Donna me prega’ and the correspondence sonnets to Dante. The selection has been arranged in seven thematic groupings. Each translation is accompanied by a short introduction and detailed annotations containing stimulating contextual information on Cavalcanti and his poetry and a discussion of difficulties encountered in the translation process.

A general introduction includes a discussion of key thematic and metrical issues as well as examining in detail the history of Cavalcanti in English.
