Hornes Down Under
Part One
by Tony Horne

Let’s turn the clock back to June 2008, when we undertook the biggest adventure of our lives and without a clue what we were doing.

We are Tony (36), Natalie (34), Molly (8) and Sam (5), and if you are a burnt-out family, bitten by the credit crunch, bogged-down by nanny-state legislation, collapsing under the burden that your life is flying by, with your kids growing up fast, together with the aching realisation that your career has positively stalled, whilst knowing that you only have the duration of the British school holidays to play with, then this is the book for you.

If you like wildlife, campervans, Australia, barbeques, arguments with airlines, theme parks, Steve Irwin, and families that just limp from one cock-up to another, then it’s all here too. In short, one mad family drives a campervan across Australia…Disaster ensues.

Let’s be clear though, this is not a guide book. No way! We had one of those on our lap every day and we just looked at each other and shouted fraud! No-that’s not what we are about. This is my travel story of a family trying to re-introduce themselves to each other after many stressful years, following a route along the coast of Australia from Darwin to Adelaide.

Oh, and by the way, my wife is writing the same account but from her point of view. What could possibly go wrong?

"I've always thought Tony horne to be a fantastic broadcaster. But what is sickening is his ability to write with such apparent ease. Any questions i had about the quality of the writing were answered within the first few pages.
He's a fantastically dedicated and talented broadcaster. Now it would seem he's as good with the written word. Nobody likes a show off!
This is a book you just have to buy." Kenny Toal, Tyne Tees Television.

“The book hooks you in from the start, and takes you on a real journey, not the kind of way you find on the X Factor. It really is a great read. It shows just how wrong you can be about someone, he is truly talented!” Brian Moore, Metro Radio

“Hornes Down Under is a charming story of a family’s quest for adventure. Their experiences ring true with anyone who’s attempted a trip-of-a-lifetime or has ever wanted to. Tony’s accessible, easy writing style draws the reader on the journey. It was a delight to have him at the Durham Book Festival 2009.” Olivia Mantle, New Writing North

"This book is an absolute must for anyone even daring to think of taking their family on holiday around Australia. A very entertaining read and highly recommended." John Weir, Australia and New Zealand Magazine.

“Some of your travel tips are great. Tell it how it is Tony, and you do. If this book isn’t a blockbuster, it should still sell well.” Julian West, Living North Magazine.

"Ideally, you'd read one day per day but had to keep going to find out what the next day had in store." David Heane, Radio Legend.

"Tony Horne is funny and smart. He is also mad." Ex-SAS hero and best-selling writer Chris Ryan

"Tony Horne is a superb writer." John Cross, The Mirror

"Tony Horne is incredibly entertaining on the radio and it's the same in print. Talk about 'family bonding.' The entire Horne family will never forget this trip and reading this book makes you feel you are sitting alongside them in the van." Ray Stubbs, ESPN anchor.

"Plenty of laugh out loud moments." Olympic legend Sonia O'Sullivan
