Morris and Flick are having the holiday of their lives in the long, hot summer of 1950, while the adults work on an archaeological dig nearby – but Roderick is really Scordril, a dragon living in a layr beneath Musselburgh, and all their lives are about to change.
After an ancient magic imprisons the Traprain Law dragons in their layr, an injured youngone flies to Scordril’s layr asking for help. Betrayal and misunderstandings have forced the two groups to live apart from each other – and the overgrounders they used to trust – for more than a hundred years.
But now Scordril and his kin must risk their lives to face a common enemy – the zombie-like nightdragons and their deadly wingriders who are returning to claim their captives. If the Lothian dragons are to succeed, they need Morris’s help – and his treasured archaeological find. Against a background of long-standing fear and mistrust – and Flick’s disappearance – the action builds to a climax at the dead of night in the caves below, and in the skies above, Traprain Law.
