Until a few months ago, George was a director of a London bank. But after committing a reprehensible, dishonourable and possibly criminal act, he has deserted his wife, and fled with his girlfriend to a remote Greek island.

While travelling back to England, his girlfriend Susanna is caught up in a people-smuggling operation, and she persuades George to help the trafficked girls, who are now held in a Greek police station. He reluctantly agrees but he is mugged at a London cash machine, and before he can be reunited with Susanna, she is killed in a hit and run accident. The police conclude she was deliberately run down, and George, travelling under a false name and with his paranoia in full flow, is arrested.

Once free, George resolves to track down the traffickers, and his search places an accomplice undercover in a Soho clip joint, as he travels to Cyprus to try to trace the smuggling routes. He forms relationships with cabaret dancers and a novice masseuse, but threats are made and his paranoia resurfaces, so he heads again for England where he stumbles across a final source of information, organises the daring rescue of one of the girls, and sees the break up of the gang.

This is a poignant and touching window into the world of girls and young women from southern and Eastern Europe who are tricked or terrified into the sex trade in London and elsewhere, and their stories are based on real cases.
