Tales from an Itinerant Agronomist
Learning from people, places and writings for a more equitable, systemic and sustainable world
by David Gibbon

The book is primarily an account of a series of different country experiences where the author was based at educational and research institutions over the last 60 years. In the early part of this period he was accompanied by his wife and young family. These include: Trinidad (1963-5), Tanzania (1969-71), Botswana (1971-74), Sudan (1974-6), Syria (1976-80), Nepal (1987-89) and Namibia (1995-6). Throughout and beyond this period he also carried out short term reviews and evaluations in over 40 other countries.

David was engaged in learning, teaching and research in applied agriculture and rural development activities with a variety of local students, farmers and international colleagues. Towards the end of the book he has looked at some cross cutting themes including the role of animal power in small farm systems, the performance of some agricultural education institutions: Leeds Univ, UW1 (Trinidad), WAU (Netherlands) and SLU (Sweden) and a selected analysis of agricultural research, in the UK, Europe and internationally, as it has related to small farm systems development in the tropics and worldwide.

The book has a relaxed non-academic style and also includes analysis of some of the historical and socio-political contexts of the countries and institutions in which David has worked.

The book has been enriched by the inputs and experiences from many farmers, colleagues and partnerships in these endeavours. David has tried to acknowledge all these outstanding and memorable people in an extended section at the end of the book.
