Devotion to Murder
by Steve Eastwood

It is May 1949 and Sister Margaret arrives in the village of Beaumont to support Lord Roding whose faith has been shattered by the death of his wife and son. It is her mission to guide him back to the path. Jeremy has remarried in haste, to Fanny, twenty-six years his junior. She doesn’t care for Sister Margaret or her interference in their marriage and she has a serious axe to grind.

When the nun is found, beaten to death, in the grounds of his Lordship’s estate, Detective Inspector Alby Cooper is assigned his first murder. Was this a poisoned chalice? It certainly seemed to be the case when, during the Post Mortem, details are discovered which lead Cooper to realise, that he is dealing with no ordinary nun. Cooper’s team, at the insistence of his Superintendent, is supplemented by two female temporary detectives, one of whom he later discovers to be the Superintendent’s niece (Linda Collins).

This is against a background of leaks to the local press that indicate that someone, close to the team, is obviously on the take.

Was she a plant? A haphazard attempt on the part of the boss to identify the source of the leaks?

This turns out not to be the case and the officer, Linda Collins, proves to be an asset to the team. A close relationship develops between Alby and Linda which means that he must balance professionalism with his feelings.

Enquiries lead Cooper and his team to liaise with the Society magazine Tatler and a cooperative relationship between Cooper and the journalists provides the key to unravelling the mystery.
