The Spell of Whirldungen
by A. J. Madelin

A mysterious letter arrives in the summer holidays which changes Chris Spratt's life in a way he could never imagine. With his friends, Rosie, Ollie and Will, he is given a place at the strange school of Cluifers, owned by the evil Dr Black.

Black comes from a world called Mandria and has magically created the school to keep an eye on the four friends, while he finds a way to destroy them. To do this Black needs the awful and long-hidden spell of Whirldungen. Chris and his friends discover what Black is up to and realise they have to find the spell first.

Join Chris, Rosie, Ollie and Will as they race for the spell and try and work out where it is before Doctor Black does. Share their wonder and excitement as they first encounter magic and realise about the other world. Share also, their growing fear as they discover more and more about the spell and why Black wants to destroy them.

Meet their magical friends - the shape-shifting moggy-cloggs, Chris's genie, Zac and a talking book who knew Chris's missing father. And their enemies - Dr Black and his wife, Nocturna, who is head of the lower school at Cluifers, the sinister cardboard man in the uniform department of their local store and vicious hobyahs - just a few of many extraordinary characters in the book.

Travel with Chris and his friends to the amazing Library of Leaves in the Academy of Mandria - a magical and, as it turns out, highly dangerous place.

What with cloaks that can kill, gargoyles that come to life and a terrible spell to find, Chris and his friends are on a steep learning curve with little or no room for error.

Who will get to the Spell of Whirldungen first?
