Chasing the Sun with Henry
by Gary Brockwell

In Gary Brockwell’s debut novel Eddie Dungiven, children’s entertainer and close hand magician, is bored with his life and of his wife Sally’s preoccupation with cleaning and taking part in flawed ‘get rich quick’ schemes. His only respite from this marital entrapment comes in the form of regular forays to a secluded beach with his Collie-Spaniel cross, Henry. That is until one day when a chance encounter with a beautiful stranger named Cerys Sindon changes everything.

As Sally’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic and causes her relationship with her husband to deteriorate, Eddie prepares to embark on the ultimate betrayal with the captivating Cerys. But the sudden death of his father figure and the sentiments of his good friend focus Eddie’s attention on a revaluation of what is central to his life and what will make him happy.

In his desperate search for answers, Eddie is drawn into the world of the medium Ignatius McKenzie and the personal revelations he presents, which have far reaching implications for both Eddie and Cerys, and a dark secret that she conceals.

Inspired by the work of John Irving and Colin Bateman, Chasing the Sun with Henry explores the effect of tragedy and change on a relationship. Gary’s thought-provoking novel will appeal to readers that enjoy contemporary fiction, especially those that are interested in relationships and the various guises of love.

A really poignant tale of every day folk with a few surprises in store. Down to earth characters that are so well written, they feel like people you know and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to them all. Can thoroughly recommend and I’m already looking forward to the next one.

I went into this book blind and thoroughly enjoyed it. It has left me thinking about our need to know some things and our need to really not know others...not sure if this was the intention.

The theme of this book is that we all deserve to be happy, and to do everything in our power to try and help ensure the happiness of those around about us, but when does that obligation begin and end...and where does the happiness of others sit with our own happiness.

The more I've thought about this book the more I see. The characters are all so cleverly written, and the way the theme's re-occur and manifest in their own lives is really well done.

This book did leave me with some unanswered questions at the end. But I think that is the point. Do we really need to have all of the answers all of the time?

I think this story will stay with me for a long time, and I thoroughly recommend it to others.

I am reviewing this book for Gary Brockwell, Troubador Publishing Limited, and NetGalley who gave me a copy of their book for an honest review.

A brilliant first book. Will certainly be looking out for future books.
I read this through quickly a few weeks ago (but life got in the way and a review writing wasn’t my priority) and when I quickly glanced back through it realised there was so much more depth to the characters than I first realised, so re-read it and am so glad I did. It fits in perfectly with this week’s theme at work ‘happiness’ as it emphasises how everyone is entitled to be happy and how we can make those around us happy. The way the characters are described made me feel as if the author was talking about someone I was friendly with.

Wow, where do I start? This debut novel is fabulous - I couldn’t put it down. The characters are so believable and the book took me on a rollercoaster of emotions - laughter, tears and anger. I really hope there will be a sequeI so I can find what happens to Eddie Dungiven.
