In and Out of Class
Ventures in Education and Community
by Gordon McGregor

This book recalls, entirely from Gordon's memory, because he never kept a diary, a long, international career as a school teacher, university lecturer, professor and college principal, attempting convey the philosophy of education he gradually developed. At Gordon's Bristol LEA junior school a succession of kind, skilful women teachers guided his enthusiasms, teaching him how to learn, through six years of war, with the city being heavily bombed.

Gordon owes Bishop Road a huge debt, especially for being co-educational. Moving to a boys' only secondary school run by Irish Christian Brothers was a shock. They were competent teachers and most were kind, but corporal punishment was frequent, severe and sometimes vicious; the all male ambience was coarse and stifling. Yet it led Gordon to an Open Scholarship in English at Bristol University, opening up amazing opportunities.
