Goliath's Eye
by Paul Round

Saving the world? David Spencer certainly didn’t think that was his destiny.

Teenager David sees himself as very ordinary, weak, and shy. He is forced into an unwanted move to a distant coastal town – which plunges him into chaos.

This new place is full of surprises. His older brother Richard has somehow turned into a completely different man. He quickly becomes entranced by a wood nymph – the iridescent Daisy. A Magical and ancient woodland is being ripped apart in the name of progress. However, the force stopping the bulldozers and protecting the natural order is a giant – a real-life giant.

His incredible new home has a strange brutal history. As bizarre events unfold David discovers he’s been singled out to help – him, and him alone. He doesn’t realise he’s slowly absorbing the madness which is consuming everyone around him. Who would ultimately survive?

Goliath’s Eye will appeal to fans of dark fantasy and Paul’s first novel, Acid Bubbles.

Full Text: Welcome to Goliath's Eye, it's something like The Shining for eco-warriors. The woodlands of a once grand private estate are being cleared for a new development of upscale homes in South West England. The woods are regarded by many locals as a "spiritual place," while children suffer nightmares after hearing dread tales of the evils that lurk within. 'The Heights' is a modern miracle of architecture, all glass and concrete, with a view of the seashore in the winter months after the leaves have fallen. The new homeowners are beside themselves with bliss. Ah, domestic tranquility. (Hold that thought.) Meanwhile, a short distance away a troupe of environmental activists are encamped at the edge of the woods, determined to protect the area from the construction of a by-pass road. Their round-the-clock vigil has brought the project to a standstill. Then things start turning strange. Really strange. Goliath's Eye is an intriguing mystery peopled with entertaining characters; it just takes too long to get from point a to point b. My time was well invested in the story for the first hundred pages but I found myself skimming the middle until the story picked back up in the final hundred pages, where it takes a sharp turn from just creepy to supernatural horror. The author thanks his copy editor and confesses that all errors were later added by him. So, I guess he gets the blame for the many typos: ecology for environment, conceit for concrete, boardroom for boredom, Columbia for Colombia. These are just a few of the many word substitutions that appear to have been made by a smellchecker program, and not a professional proofreader. There's a lot to like about this book. Losing a hundred pages, and a thorough proofreading would bring it up to a five star read.
