The Long Village
by Henry May

The author held the Queen's commission as an Officer of Customs & Excise before the service was re-organised in 1972. A lament for the hitherto Dickensian revenue practices and the amalgamation of H.M.C&E into the Civil Service as a whole is the backdrop to the author's decision, as a single parent, to take up a peripatetic adventure by setting up home with his two young children on a canal narrow boat in the early 1980's.

Autobiographical, there is a chronology underlying this histoire but it is by no means written as a diary. The manuscript could appeal to social historians and canal enthusiasts at least. It was written for family, friends and disbelievers.
