Out of the Matrix
by Anna Cole

Our contemporary English poets are mostly one-string fiddles. It is as if they had arrogated to themselves a certain field of human experience, a form of selfish self-expression. So they keep a jealous eye on the self-absorptions of other poets, wary of finding interlopers in their own costively-guarded range of literary style. The result is for the most part a desert of deadly dull verse.

So it was with a sense of great refreshment that I read Anna Cole's very variegated collection. I find it full of colour, humour, invention and sheer verbal and poetic skill, that gives a special healthy sparkle in her extensive choice of forms, rhymes and rhythms.
